FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Through improved skills, confidence, fitness and knowledge, you will be able to ride socially, commute to work, ride regularly (and for longer!) to improve your fitness, ride your children to school or participate in community rides/events. After participating in this program, you will be skilled and confident to get out there and simply enjoy the ride!
She Rides Confidence and Together programs are not designed as learn-to-ride programs, however you can learn to ride through the Basics program, which is 3 x 1 hour private lessons with a She Rides Leader. Depending on your skills and confidence and how quickly you progress, you may need to consider purchasing a second Basics program to continue your progression and further develop your skills.
An Expression of Interest period is held and applications are accepted from accredited cycling/mountain bike coaches and teachers (women and men) interested in being She Rides Leaders. While there may be interest for a She Rides Program to be held in certain locations, suitably qualified people need to apply to be She Rides Leaders so that a location can be considered.
If you would like to see a She Rides Program near you, please express your interest on the She Rides website, providing your name, email address, location and the program type you are interested in so that we can investigate She Rides Leader options in those locations and we can keep you up to date on She Rides.
She Rides programs are designed with the less experienced rider in mind who is seeking improved skills, confidence, fitness and support to ride regularly. Your level of skills, confidence and fitness will assist with determining which She Rides program will best support you to ride regularly.
To learn more about the She Rides programs available, visit the Program Types page.
Session lengths are scheduled to be no longer than 2 hours in duration (She Rides Confidence and She Rides Together) or 90min in duration (She Rides Basics) however it’s best to check the program overview for your chosen location on the Locations Page to review the schedule on offer.
The amount of time spent riding during a single session does depend on the program type you participate in. Distances, riding routes, difficulty (e.g. hills or technical aspects) and the amount of time spent continually riding will also be dependent upon the skills and fitness levels of the participants.
She Rides Confidence programs, designed to develop the skills and confidence to ride socially in a group, will progressively introduce ride time, with the distance travelled and time spent riding continually built up each week so each participant has the time to improve their skills, confidence and fitness gradually. Only towards the end of the program will the rides be more continual in nature (e.g. earlier sessions may include more breaks and skill activities built into the session so you are not riding continually for the whole time). The majority of the session on She Rides Together programs will be spent riding.
The registration process obtains information about your fitness levels and riding distances and frequency so that She Rides Leaders can plan and adjust programs to suit the participant’s needs and ability levels
Participation in She Rides requires you to bring your own bike. Why? She Rides encourages skills and confidence, not only while riding the bike, but preparing to ride it, transporting it and performing basic maintenance, such pumping the tyres and how to change a flat tyre. These skills will make you a more independent bike rider and learning all these skills on your own bike supports your independence following participation in the program. If you do not currently own a bike, you can still register for the program, but you will need to loan or purchase one prior to the program commencing.
The bike types welcome on She Rides programs varies, depending upon the program type you wish to participate in. Some bike types may restrict your full participation, achievement of outcomes and enjoyment of the program due to the speed, distance and/or terrain of the program on offer.
Please consult the program information provided for the program you wish to participate in to determine if your current bike type is suitable. The Program Information Page also provides recommendations for each type of She Rides Program.
Remember that bikes do not need to be fancy or expensive, cheap and less fancy bikes are more than welcome as long as they are safe to ride! If you are still unsure whether your bike is suitable, please contact the She Rides team.

Individuals are unable to opt in / opt out for any given week (like how a weekly riding group may work). We have many participants who miss weeks here and there for all sorts of reasons and benefits from the program can still be achieved if the participant rides during the week they are unable to attend the session.
