I love the sport of Cycling and enjoy the health, lifestyle and social benefits participating bring to my and my family’s life. I have been coaching sports both inside and outside of cycling for the last couple of years and have a passion for sharing with others and enjoy seeing and assisting them achieve their goals. My club where I coordinate the mountain bike activities, including skills coaching has a culture of helping and supporting others and in particular I have witnessed the ladies in the club grow in their fitness and skills to the point that they are launching a (road riding) Elite Women’s team in 2016. The She Rides program is a good opportunity to help other women to get more into the sport by providing them the confidence and potentially the kick start needed to get over that initial hump into something that is truly addictive in a positive way and life changing.
My favourite type of riding is first and foremost mountain biking however I enjoy riding cyclocross and road riding also and find that each compliments the other in terms of skill, fitness building, oh and finding new coffee shops! I race each of these disciplines which I find helps provide me a goal to work towards each year however in the off season I find coaching a great way to give back to the sport, build new friendships and have some fun! I think the reason why mountain biking is my favourite type of riding is that you can get out on the trails in a forest, take in some fresh air in an environment where you can just clear your mind from the hustle and bustle of life whilst doing something good for your health, with your mates.
I first got into cycling 16 years ago when I started commuting to university on a rusty old road bike. My love for cycling has grown over that time drawing me to triathlon, road cycling, MTBing, cross triathlon and adventure racing events. I owe a lot to cycling, it has brought many good friends, fun times, great memories, adventurous travel and best of all the love of my life (my wife). Cycling has also provided me with a career in bike fitting allowing me to combine my love of cycling and my extensive knowledge of biomechanics.
I now enjoy Mtbing with my 11 year old son showing him my enthusiasm for the outdoors, my love for the bush and the challenges that you can concur when MTBing. I am also enjoying training with my friends for the upcoming MTBing season.
I am originally an Exercise Physiologist (Undergraduate Bachelor Degree) and Biomechanist (Postgraduate Research Master Degree). I am also a qualified as Level 1 Triathlon Coach, Level 1 MTB Coach and Level 1 Road & Track Coach with over 20 years working in the fitness and sports industry. I look forward to helping the ladies in the She Rides program on their MTBing journey, to learn new skills and to challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment.
The SheRides Daisy Hill Forest – Mountain Bike Course is a perfect way to build confidence on your mtb through gaining skills and fitness under the safety and guidance of two qualified MTBA Level 1 coaches. The program caters to all levels of rider ability and fitness and starts all riders off on a flat grassy open area for “back to basics” skills learning for the first few sessions. These are always allot of fun and a great way to get to know the fellow course participants. From here (generally about session 4) we move on to the Daisy Hill Forest trails starting with open fire trails (car width trails) and progressing over time through to single trail (one bike width) over the remaining duration of the course. In these sessions we ride as a group so no one gets left behind and in the earlier sessions we stop to review trail sections (ok and so the occasional breather can be had!) . We generally explore different areas of the forest each week to match the skill and fitness level of the group as it develops. Session 6 will be at a local bike shop to learn more about bike types and their maintenance. These are always fun as a change to get together off the bikes and we generally have a tyre changing session after to round out the day. The sessions are a great no pressure environment to learn a safer way to ride with correct technique, meet new fellow ladies to ride with and challenge yourself to new skill and fitness levels, with an emphasis on fun!
